How do you know if you suffer from sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is defined as an interruption in your breathing pattern while you are asleep. This brief break lasts approximately 10 to 20 seconds and can occur hundreds of times throughout a single night. This break disrupts your normal sleep pattern and brings you into a light sleep that is far less restful and restorative. Over time, the lack of deep sleep you accrue will really become evident. Not only will you be less energetic and productive the following day, but after just a short while you will suffer from slower reflexes and an inability to concentrate. If left untreated, sleep apnea can eventually lead to a slew of health problems including weight gain, high blood pressure, heart disease, and depression.  Sleep apnea is clearly a disorder that must be taken seriously and should be treated as readily as possible.

The best way to remedy this situation is to ask your bed mate to monitor your sleeping pattern but for a more conclusive result you can conduct a overnight sleep study; this will require a prescription from your physician.  A person who suffers from sleep apnea may exhibit all or some of the following: loud, repetitive snoring, choking, snorting, or gasping, and long pauses in their breathing. These symptoms should act as warning signs that there may be a larger, more serious problem at hand: sleep apnea.

There are even more signs that you can use to determine if you are living with sleep apnea.  Some symptoms of sleep apnea that are exhibited throughout the night are clearer and more detectable.  These include suffering from insomnia, frequent nighttime visit to the bathroom, or waking up several times throughout the night. It is also important to monitor your daily life for even more clues. These include: waking up with a dry mouth or throat or with shortage of breath, having morning headaches, experiencing forgetfulness and daytime sleepiness, and feeling moody, irritable, or depressed. If you exhibit any or all of these symptoms you should be wary that you may be a victim of sleep apnea and schedule an appointment to meet with your doctor.

While some symptoms of sleep apnea, like snoring, may seem innocent, they should still spark you to take action. While snoring is in fact a common issue, there is a distinction between harmless snoring and the first signs of sleep apnea. While regular snoring may be disruptive to your bed partner, it will not interfere with your daily life. Sleep apnea, on the other hand, will. It is thus imperative that you observe your entire day and night in order to effectively discern between a bad habit and a potentially more threatening disorder.
